an example of dying to self

Friends,

Look at this ESPN story/video on sportsmanship. It is hitting the blogs and media outlets as it gains popularity. I don’t want to make the video out to be more profound than it is but it does remind me of the subject of “dying to self.”

Dying to self must be at the core of what we do and who we are as Christ followers and church leaders. Much of the downward trend we observe in churches today (ineffectiveness, not only numerical decline) is a direct result of one or more persons refusing to die to self. Only through dying to self can incarnational living, ministry, and mission be realized.

Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship” (NIV).

  1. KEVIN THIS IS MY DESIRE . I WORK DAILY FOR THIS TO TAKE OVER MY LIFE WITH THE AID OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. I HAVE NO IDEA THAT I WILL EVER REACH THIS BUT THIS IS MY DESIRE TO SERVE HIM MORE AND SELF TO BECOME ONLY ONE OF HIS VESSELS TO BE USED BY HIM FOR WHAT EVER HIS PURPOSE. HOW FOR OFF AM YOUR FRIEND, CLO

  2. Clo,

You and AJ have continually sought to “die to self.” You have taught me much! The sad fact is that the opposite is true in many churches – this is often why they struggle, sputter, split, and settle.
